The National Heart, Lumg and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of
USA (http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/guidelines/obesity/ob_home.htm
) obesity guidelines propose that doctors use body mass index (BMI)
to assess patients because the index is simple, correlates to fatness,
and applies to both men and women.
Obesity and
overweight substantially increase the risk of morbidity from
hypertension; dyslipidemia; type 2 diabetes; coronary heart disease;
stroke; gallbladder disease; osteoarthritis; sleep apnea and
respiratory problems; and endometrial, breast, prostate, and colon
cancers. Higher body weights are also associated with increases in
all-cause mortality.
